RENO, Nev. - Racing in the second women's race of the afternoon, the Nevada Wolf Pack cross country team snagged third at the 2016 Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. Saturday.
Leading Nevada across the finish line was freshman Hiley Dobbs, who came in at 21:43 in the 6000 meter race, a 59 second collegiate personal record for the Canada native. The Pack had two other sub-22 runners in freshman Cora Gallop (21:47) and Stefanie Ortega (21:56), both personal records. Overall, the split between Nevada's top five runners was just 37 seconds as Nevada took third with a score of 166, beating out 22 other teams.
"Coach really wanted us to go out controlled, and keep moving up the entire time," Dobbs said. "That's actually my favorite way to race."
Dobbs said sticking with those in front of her really kept her and her group going.
"Between the 2K and the 3K mark, the group ahead of us started breaking away. I didn't want to lose them."
Nevada's lead group stuck to the back of the group for the first third of the race and began passing runner after runner moving through the final two thirds. Dobbs helped to push her group ahead as the runners began to separate and the field began to spread.
"I'm really proud of my performance," Dobbs said. She also noted the course felt a lot like her high school races in Eastern Canada thanks to the gloomy weather and rolling grass hills.
A total of six Pack runners put out personal best performances on the Indiana course, including Dobbs, Gallop, Ortega, sophomore McKenna Evans, and freshmen Adria Barich and Katarina Stashyn who raced in the open race.
Nevada will now take two weeks off before the Mountain West Championships, hosted by Boise State on Oct. 28.
