COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After over a month layoff, the 13th ranked University of Nevada rifle team lost a close match at #6 Air Force on Saturday by a score of 4679-4648. The loss dropped the Wolf Pack to 5-3 on the season while the Falcons improved to 8-5.

Nevada's next competition is Feb. 4 against Alaska at TCU. The team then competes in the Patriot Rifle Conference Championships on Feb. 7 that is being hosted by TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.

"Mitchell, Sarah, and Greta shot both guns well," head coach Fred Harvey said. "Niki had a good air rifle score and Justin, despite illness had a good smallbore performance."

Nevada's 4679 is 38 points better than the previous season-high of 4641 at TCU. The 2309 is also season high, two points more than the 2307 that also came at TCU on Oct. 15, 2015.

AF won the smallbore competition by one point, 2310-2309. Pack freshman Mitchell Van Patten posted the top score in smallbore with his 581. Senior Greta Ochsner placed fourth with a 579 and Sarah Jameson finished sixth with a 577. Sophomore Justin Nissen gave Nevada a fourth shooter in the top 10 with a score of 572.

The Falcons won the air rifle 2369-2339. Van Patten would have posted the top score in air rifle but he self-reported a malfunction that cost him 10 points. He finished ninth with a 586 and was the only Nevada competitor to place in the top 10. Ochsner was 11th with a 583 and Niki Silveria also shot 583 to place 12th.
