OMAHA, Neb. -- The 22nd-ranked Nevada baseball team became the third team in program history to reach the 40-win plateau as junior LHP Christian Stolo and sophomore RHP Evan McMahan combined for a shutout. The Wolf Pack defeated Creighton, 4-0, Saturday at TD Amertirade Park Omaha to clinch the series victory and improve to 40-12 on the season.
Stolo -- a local product out of McQueen High School -- collected his sixth straight win and improved to 7-1 after limiting the Bluejays to six base runners in five inning. McMahan finished the shutout with four scoreless frames, collecting his third save while allowing three hits and no walks.
The Wolf Pack joins the 1992 (43-11-1) and 2000 (41-15) teams in rarified air as the only 40-win squads in program history. Nevada also improved to 19-9 on the road, improving to second in its record book for road wins in a season. The Pack is now 13-1 in multi-game series this year after defeating Creighton in consecutive outings.
"That was nothing short of an awesome performance from both Christian and Evan," said head coach Jay Johnson. "Christian has really emerged as a legit, front-line starter in Division I baseball and he adds a lot to this team. On the same token, Evan has been one of our biggest stories this year."
Stolo and McMahan combined to strand nine Bluejays on base and limit Creighton to 2-of-17 (.118) batting with runners on base. Stolo lowered his ERA team-best ERA among starters to 2.74, while McMahn's ERA dropped to 1.45.
Nevada struck first with two runs in the second inning. Trenton Brooks singled and Jordan Pearce walked before reaching scoring positions with two outs for Jordan Devencenzi. The senior catcher singled to center field on a 0-2 count, scoring both runners to improve his RBI total to 25.
Kewby Meyer hit an RBI single in the third and Brooks hit an RBI single in the fifth to put the Pack in front, 5-0, through five. With Stolo and McMahan dealing on the mound, Nevada's four runs proved to be plenty enough for its 40th win of the season.
The Pack finished with four runs on eight hits. Brooks went 2-of-3 with a run and RBI while improving his team-long reached base streak to 26 games. Brooks leads Nevada with a .364 season batting average. Stevenson -- the center fielder from Fremont, Calif. -- tallied his 25th multi-game of his freshman season.
