Day Two Results

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- An event win in the 800m run sprung sophomore Nicole Wadden to a third place finish in the heptathlon on Thursday in the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the SDSU Sports Deck.

Wadden earned her third place medal with a PR of 5,317 points, second-best in Nevada outdoor program history. The sophomore began the day in fourth place after Wednesday's round of four events. Thursday featured three events to close out the heptathlon, the long jump, javelin and the 800m run.

The Canadian native began the day with a jump of 18'5.25" (5.62m) in the long jump, tying for third in the field. She followed that up with a season-best throw of 115'4" (35.15m) in the javelin, hovering around a medal position heading into the final event.

With rain beginning to fall, Wadden sprinted out to a sizeable lead at the start of the 800m. With half a lap remaining in the race, competitors began closing the gap but Wadden held off the runner-up finisher by .04 seconds to claim the event win with a time of 2:19.76 and 827 points towards her total, propelling her into third.

Chari Hawkins of Utah State, the leader after day one, managed to hold off a charge from the rest of the field to claim the heptathlon title. Hawkins finished the event with 5,622 points. Jessica Green of Colorado State finished in second place by collecting 5,350 points.
