RENO, Nev. -- With the match tied at three, University of Nevada (7-9) sophomore Sheila Morales won in three sets at #1 singles to give the Wolf Pack a 4-3 nonconference victory over Northern Arizona (8-9) at Caughlin Club today. The win snapped a two-match skid as the Pack improved to 7-9 on the season while the Lumberjacks fell to 8-9.
Nevada returns to action on Sunday at intrastate rival UNLV at 10:00 a.m. The match a Mountain West contest and is part of the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy.
Morales struggled to start the match falling to Johanna Vang 6-3 in the first set. The Pamplona, Spain native dominated the second set 6-3. With her Wolf Pack teammates on the adjacent court cheering her on she cruised in the deciding third set 6-2 to give Nevada the 4-3 victory.
Nevada started slow dropping the #1 and #3 doubles matches as NAU earned the doubles point. Vang and Marta Lewandowska downed Morales and Blaga Delic 6-3 in #1 doubles. The Lumberjacks' Sarah Maria Spruch and Livia Hollosy won the #3 doubles match over Monika Magusiak and Sara Korzeniecki 6-3 to clinch the team point. The Pack's Juliette Legendre and Sheila Smiley were leading Emelia Box and Hailey Rochin 5-4 but the match went unfinished after NAU had clinched the doubles point.
The Pack won four of the six singles pairing to take the match 4-3. Legendre cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Rochin at #2 singles to score the Pack's first point of the match. Delic put the Pack on top 2-1 with an easy 6-0, 6-2 victory over Jordan Denesik in the #4 singles match. Lewandowska defeated Magusiak 6-3, 6-4 at #5 singles to tie the match at 2-2.
Smiley won in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 over Box at #3 singles and Nevada led once again 3-2. NAU's Sara Brown won #6 singles 6-3, 6-1 over Elissa Pavelea to tie the match a three and setup the exciting finish in #1 singles where the Pack prevailed on the Morales victory.
