Weekly Track Notes Meet Schedule RENO, Nev. -- The University of Nevada track & field team returns to competition this week and heads to Southern California for the Legends Invitational this Friday and Saturday, hosted by UCLA.
Most events for Nevada will take place on Saturday, but the meet kicks off Friday at noon with the women's hammer throw.
"We are excited to get in a competition this weekend and to build off the last few weeks. This will be the first time where you will see a full roster competing and covering every event," head coach Shantel Twiggs said. "We are looking to re-write the all-time list and maybe even flirt with some school records. Â Drake Stadium is an awesome venue to compete in and we are excited for the opportunity."
The Wolf Pack was last in action back on March 21 for the one-day Hornet Invite at Sacramento State and produced a couple of event wins in the 100m hurdles and high jump. Along with those event wins, a few record book shake-ups were on display as well, as a few members of the Pack etched their names onto the Nevada all-time top-10 list.
One of those event winners, sophomore
Fiyin Olusola, is back in action this weekend and will look to improve on her time in the 100m hurdles and advance on the national list. Olusola's time of 13.62 seconds at the Hornet Invite is the fifth-best mark in the region and leads the Mountain West.
The other event winner, sophomore
Leah Carter, returns to the high jump in hopes of earning another event victory. She will be alongside teammates
Nicole Wadden and
Kinsey Minter in the event. Junior
Alison Powers, the team's perennial pole vaulter, is coming off of a PR in her event and is in search of hitting the elusive 4.00m barrier and make a splash on the national level.Â
After running to a top-20 NCAA West Region performance at the Hornet Invite in the 1500m with the sixth-best mark in program history, junior
Emily Myers will try her hand in the 5000m this weekend. Running in the 1500m will be classmate
Caitlin Devitt-Payne who is looking to improve upon her notable performance in the indoor mile and has her eyes set on the school record, set by alum
Samantha Diaz in 2011.
The Nevada sprinters also have their sites set high this weekend and are looking to post noteworthy times in their respective events. One of the Pack's most consistent sprinters has been freshman
Katherine Surin, who owns the fourth-best time in program history in the 400m dash. Surin is looking to better that mark even further this weekend. The Wolf Pack will also be sending a contingent of steeplechase participants who are gunning to make their mark on the all-time list.
"We have a litany of individuals that can have break out season performances and we are looking forward to watching each student-athlete get one step closer to reaching their potential," said Twiggs.
