RENO, Nev. -- Despite a solo home run from junior
Amanda Weis and RBI singles from senior
Molly McWilliams and sophomore
Nikki Orozco that gave the Nevada softball team an early 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, the Wolf Pack could not hold on as it fell to UNLV, 7-3, in the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon.
One day after tossing five innings of relief in a winning effort yesterday, senior
Megan Dortch took the loss for the Pack (14-30, 4-11 MW). Weis' round tripper was her eighth of the season which currently ranks in a tie for first on the team with junior
Megan Sweet. On Sunday, Sweet went hitless for the first time since March 29, snapping an 11-game hitting streak.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Wolf Pack offense was jumpstarted by Weis, who with two outs sent the first pitch she saw to left-center field for a solo home run that tied the game at 1-1. Nevada continued its two-out rally with a single from sophomore
Raquel Martinez and walk from senior
Ashley Butera that gave the Pack runners on first and second. McWilliams followed with an RBI single to right that scored Martinez from second and gave Nevada a 2-1 lead. With Butera at third and McWilliams at second after advancing on a wild pitch, Orozco added an insurance run on a bloop single to left field that made it 3-1 in favor of the Pack.
The Rebels plated three runs of their own in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, 4-3, and despite back-to-back singles from senior
Karley Hopkins and junior
Jasmine Jenkins in the bottom half of the frame, the Pack couldn't muster a rally.
Sophomore
McKenna Isenberg came on in relief of Dortch in the top of the sixth and recorded three strikeouts but UNLV tacked on three more runs in the sixth and seventh innings that made it 7-3.
The Pack will next travel to Fresno State for a three-game set from April 24-26.
