LAS VEGAS -- With the match tied at three, University of Nevada (8-9, 1-3 MW) junior Monika Magusiak won the #5 singles in three sets to give the Wolf Pack a 4-3 win over intrastate rival UNLV (7-15, 1-3 MW) at the Fertitta Tennis Complex today in Las Vegas. The win was the Wolf Pack first Mountain West victory of the season as the team is 1-3 in conference play and 8-9 overall. The Rebels dropped to 7-15 and 1-3 in the MW. It was the second year in a row the Pack defeated UNLV 4-3.
Nevada ends the regular season at home on Saturday against San Jose State at 1 p.m. at Caughlin Club.
Magusiak won the first set 6-4 over Mercedes Lopez Valez then lost the second 7-5. In the deciding third set the Osielsko, Poland native cruised to a 6-3 win to clinch the 4-3 victory for the Pack.
Nevada trailed the Rebels 1-0 after the doubles competition. Sheila Morales and Blaga Delic won the #1 doubles easily 6-1 over Valez and Anett Ferenczi-Bako. The Rebels #3 doubles team of Alexis Garrett and Iren Kotseva defeated the Pack's Elissa Pavelea and Magusiak 6-4 as it would come down to the #2 doubles. Santa Shumilina and Paola Artiga sealed the doubles point for UNLV with a 6-2 victory over Juliette Legendre and Sheila Smiley.
Legendre tied the score with a 6-2, 7-6 (11-9) victory over Ferenczi-Bako at #2 singles. She won the tiebreaker in the second set 11-9. The Rebels won the next two completed matches to get within a point of winning the match. Artiga defeated Delic 6-3, 6-0 in the #4 singles match and Garrett defeated the Pack's Korzeniecki 4-6, 6-1 and 6-2 to make the score 3-1.
Morales won a hard fought #1 singles match over Shumilina 7-5, 7-5 to close the gap to one at 3-2. Smiley needed three sets to tie the match score at three and did that by taking the third set tiebreaker from Kotseva 7-4. She won the first set 7-5 but dropped the second 6-4 sending the #3 singles to the deciding third set in which she prevailed 7-6.
It all came down to the #5 singles which Magusiak won in three sets to give the Pack the 4-3 victory over the Rebels.
