LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Nevada baseball team suffered its first conference loss of the season in a 1-0 setback to UNLV on Saturday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The 29th-ranked Wolf Pack (12-2, 4-1) was held scoreless for the first time this season while being limited to a season-low four hits.
Senior RHP Jason Deitrich turned in a second consecutive stellar outing, allowing one run in 6.2 innings of work. Meanwhile, the Nevada offense couldn't reach its typical production as the Rebels' junior RHP Kenny Oakley pitched a complete game shutout. UNLV snapped Nevada's five-game win streak.
The Wolf Pack and Rebels will meet in a rubber match Sunday at 1:05 p.m. PT in Las Vegas.
After scoring four runs in the seventh inning in a comeback victory in game one, Nevada was unable to rally after UNLV scored the winning run in the second inning.
The Rebels' Morgan Stotts lead off the bottom of the second with a single to left field. Senior Dylan Ellis followed with a single and Stotts was able to score from second base following a Wolf Pack throwing error.
Deitrich - who pitched a complete game in his last start - kept Nevada within one run throughout the contest. The Graden Grove, Calif., native pitched into the seventh inning, striking out six batters. Deitrich lowered his ERA to 1.80 while falling to 2-1 on the year.
Nevada's best chance to pull level came in the top of the sixth. Senior Jordan Devencenzi walked and freshman Cal Stevenson singled before reaching third and second base with two outs. On a 1-2 count, senior Kewby Meyer flied out to left field as Oakley escaped with his shutout intact.
Senior Kyle Hunt, senior Austin Byler, Devencenzi and Stevenson each recorded one hit to lead Nevada.
The series finale between the Wolf Pack and Rebels is set for 1:05 p.m. PT Sunday at Wilson Stadium. Nevada and UNLV will meet again April 2-4 at Peccole Park. The Pack will also plat on Tuesday, traveling to UC Davis for a mid-week matchup.
