RENO, Nev. -- Despite a strong outing from sophomore
McKenna Isenberg and two-hit afternoons from junior
Jasmine Jenkins and senior
Ashley Butera, the Nevada softball team could not get anything going at the plate as Utah State topped the Wolf Pack, 5-0, in Nevada's conference opener at Hixson Park on Friday afternoon.
Isenberg, who had won her last five starts coming into Friday, took the loss for the Pack (10-20, 0-1 MW).
After the Aggies pushed a run across in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead, Isenberg settled down and blanked Utah State for the next four frames.
Nevada tried to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when Butera led off the inning with single and was moved to second on an opposite-field single from senior
Karley Hopkins. The Pack loaded the bases on an infield single from Jenkins but all runners were left stranded. Aggie starter Noelle Johnson, who entered the game a team-best 3.47 ERA, kept the Nevada bats at bay for the remainder of the game.
Game two of Nevada's conference-opening series against Utah State will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. Saturday's contest also marks Pink Day at Hixson Park, all fans who wear pink to the ballpark will receive free admission.
