SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Nevada track & field team staked two event wins Saturday afternoon at the Hornet Invite, hosted by Sacramento State.

"We took the next step in the right direction for many of us," head coach Shantel Twiggs said. "We came away with a couple of event wins and a litany of Nevada all-time performances and personal best marks or season openers. We have more work to put in as we prepare for the conference outdoor championships in May."

The two event victories were divvied up evenly between one track event win and one field event win. Sophomore Leah Carter took home the crown in the high jump, while classmate Fiyin Olusola snagged the win in the 100m hurdles. Carter cleared a season-best mark of 1.72m, or 5'7.75", to edge redshirt junior teammate Kinsey Minter, who finished as the runner-up.

Olusola on the other hand, bested the runner-up in her event by .30 seconds. Her 100m hurdles time of 13.62 seconds is not only a personal record, but ranks as the second-best time in the Nevada outdoor record book.

The Wolf Pack, which finished third in the team standings out of five teams, also notched a few additional notable individual performances on this second weekend of outdoor competition. Junior Alison Powers registered a fourth place showing in the pole vault with a PR mark of 3.85m, or 12'7.5", the fifth-best mark all-time.

Fellow junior Emily Myers PR'd as well in her lone event of the day, the 1500m run, finishing in fifth after crossing the line at 4:28.41, establishing the sixth-fastest time in program history.

The Pack got solid executions from some of its underclassmen as well on Saturday. Freshman Katherine Surin clocked in at 55.43 seconds, fourth-best all-time, to stake a top-five in the 400m dash. Fellow rookie Makeya White registered two sixth place finishes on the day, running a 12.20 in the 100m dash and a 25.01 in the 200m dash.

Another Pack member in her first season, Brittany Graves, recorded a fifth place showing in the triple jump after posting the seventh-best mark in program history at 11.74m, or 38'6.25". Sophomore Nicole Wadden, who competed in four events, grabbed fifth in the high jump with a mark of 1.62m, or 5'3.75". Wadden also snagged top-10's in the long jump, triple jump and 100m hurdles.

Nevada will take next weekend off from competition and return to the track April 3-4 for the Legends Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif., hosted by UCLA.
