PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico - In what was the first NCAA softball regular season game played outside of the United States, a late game rally was not enough for the Nevada softball team as the Wolf Pack fell to BYU, 7-5, on the first day of the Puerto Vallarta Collegiate Challenge on Thursday.
After the Cougars scored four runs in the first inning, Nevada replied with a run of its own as freshman
Alyssa Mendez scored from third base on a throwing error by the catcher attempting to pick off freshman
Jennifer Purcell at first.
BYU plated two more runs in the third to extend its advantage to 6-1 and held its five run lead heading into the top of the fifth. With one out in that inning, Mendez reach on an error and junior
Amanda Weis followed with a single up the middle to put two on for Nevada. With two outs and both runners in scoring positions after a fielder's choice from Purcell, McWilliams hit a two RBI single to center field that sent Purcell to third and cut the BYU lead to 6-3. Purcell then scored on a single from Hopkins that made it 6-4 before the Cougars ended the threat.
Nevada made it a 6-5 game in the top of the sixth after Weis singled down the left field line that scored junior
Jasmine Jenkins. But BYU plated a run in the bottom of the inning that made it 7-5 before closing the door in the seventh.
The Pack will be back in action tomorrow at tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. PT to take on Northern Colorado before facing Southern Illinois at 2:30 p.m. PT.
