ABILENE, Texas - After scoring 21 combined runs in its first two victories, the Nevada baseball team used pitching and defense in game three to sweep Abilene Christian at Crutcher Scott Field. The Wolf Pack (3-0) won, 3-2, Sunday afternoon as junior Adam Whitt struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth with two runners on board.
Nevada opens the season with three straight wins and a series sweep for the first time since 1997, when the Wolf Pack swept Pepperdine on the road.
"It was a good win today and we learned a few things about our team that will be helpful down the road," said head coach Jay Johnson. "Our pitching from Stolo, Brooks, Held and Whitt was outstanding and we got two big two-out hits with runners in scoring position."
Johnson and the Wolf Pack will now travel 163 miles to Lubbock, Texas, to take on undefeated Texas Tech (4-0) Tuesday at 12 p.m. (PT) at Rip Griffin Park. The Red Raiders are ranked in the top 10 by Baseball America (5th) and Collegiate Baseball (9th).
Reno native Christian Stolo, a junior transfer from Western Nevada and product of McQueen High School, earned the victory in his Wolf Pack debut. A six-foot left-handed hurler, Stolo struck out eight batters in 5.2 innings while allowing four hits and one unearned run.
After Nevada scored a combined 11 runs in the first two innings of its first games in Abilene, the Wolf Pack and Wildcats (0-3) went scoreless into the third inning. Nevada scored first for the third straight game when junior Ryan Howell doubled to left field, scoring senior Kewby Meyer with two outs in the top of the third inning.
Senior Kyle Hunt doubled home the game's deciding runs in the fourth frame with another vital two-out hit, scoring freshmen Cal Stevenson and Grant Fennell to take a 3-0 lead.
Abilene Christian got on the scoreboard in the sixth when Tyler Eager stole third and scored on a throwing error. The Wildcats then pulled within one run in the eighth inning on a Ryan Crippen RBI double.
For the second straight game, Nevada held on for the win in the final inning with two Wildcat runners on base. Whitt, who led Nevada in saves last season, struck out two batters while allowing two singles. With a 1-2 count on sophomore Aaron Draper and runners on second and third, Whitt tallied his third strikeout of the inning to secure the victory.
Sophomore Trenton Brooks and junior Ryan Held made their season debuts on the mound in relief of Stolo, setting up Whitt for the save. The Nevada bats were led by Hunt's two runners batted in, while senior Jordan Devencenzi and Howell added two hits apiece. Howell improves to 6-of-10 at the plate this season with four RBI.
After Nevada's mid-week meeting with Texas Tech, the Wolf Pack will make its Peccole Park and conference debut, hosting Fresno State, Feb. 20-22.
