RENO, Nev. - Battling a cold, senior Emily Myers logged the best Championships finish of her career, leading the Nevada Wolf Pack in 13th place at the Mountain West Championships this morning.
Myers, with a time of 23:33, earned an all-conference second team spot, her first conference honor since winning freshman of the year in 2012. Senior Erika Root (24:26) placed 25th and sophomore Marissa Suan (24:58) took 34th to follow up behind Myers. The team also beat out UNLV to score three Governor's Series points. The race featured two of the top-10 teams in the country and several of the top individuals, including the No. 1 runner in Boise State's Allie Ostrander. Almost as tough as the competition was the course itself.
"It hurt," said Myers. "This is definitely the hardest cross country race I have competed in during college. On that last hill, everyone around me was pretty much walking we were running so slow."
Nevada placed just five points behind Utah State, a testament to the closeness of the race and the conference overall.
"We can beat a lot of these teams," said head coach Kirk Elias. "If things had gone just a little different, we could have been third."
Elias said now, it's time to focus on regionals.
"I'm disappointed, but not in terms of the heart and the push our team showed today," he said. "We're going to come back and give these teams a run for their money."
The Pack will compete at regionals in Albuquerque, N.M. on Nov. 13.
