BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of Nevada women's tennis team started slow in its first competition of the season at the Cal Nike Invitation but battled back in consolation play. All seven players on the trip fell in their first matches but five won in consolation play.
In the blue singles sophomore Claudia Herrero lost in three sets to Arizona State's Alex Osborne by scores of 2-6, 7-6 and 6-4. Herrero battled back to defeat BYU's Toby Miclat 6-2, 6-7 and 7-6 in the consolation match.
Junior Sheila Morales lost her round of 32 match in three sets 6-1, 2-6 and 6-3 to ASU's Ebony Panoho. Morales dropped her consolation match 6-2, 6-7 and 1-0 to Sacramento State's Alina Soltanici who was seeded eighth.
In the gold singles Monika Magusiak, Adriana Gergelyova, Blaga Delic and Lea Schneider all lost in the round of 32 but scored victories in consolation play. Freshman Delaney Phanco lost her round of 16 match in the white singles 6-3, 6-1 to UC Davis' Isabella vonEbbe.
The Pack's 27th ranked doubles team of Morales and Delic defeated the St. Mary's duo of Jamie Pawid and Kareena Manjo 8-3 in the blue doubles round of 16.
The other two Pack doubles team were not as successful as Schneider and Magusiak lost in the round of 16 in the white bracket 8-6. Herrero and Gergelyova lost in the gold bracket doubles 8-3 to SJSU's doubles team.
Play in the invitational continues Saturday and Sunday.
