Final Meet Results
BOISE, Idaho - The Nevada swimming and diving team competed for the final time in the regular season Saturday, as junior Yawen Li lead the Wolf Pack with two victories. Li's first place finishes weren't enough to spur Nevada (8-2) past Boise State (5-1), who prevailed 163-97 at the West Family YMCA and Boise Aquatics Center.
After its loss to Boise State, who has been ranked near the top 25 all year, Nevada will close the dual season with an 8-2 record - its best under third-year head coach Abby Steketee. The Wolf Pack will now set its sights on the Mountain West Championships, Feb. 18-21, in San Antonio, Texas.
"Boise State is a well-prepared, talented team and it's very valuable for a rising team like us to take them on in a dual," said Steketee. "We gained a lot in the lessons we learned today even though we lost in the final score."
Li, a junior from Wuhan, China, tallied a pair of first place finishes in individual events to lead the Wolf Pack. An All-Mountain West selection last season, Li won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:01.86 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:16.32. Li's 200 fly time set a personal season-best and ranks seventh in the Mountain West this season, while her 200 breaststroke time was Nevada's second-fastest race in the event this year.
The Wolf Pack excelled in backstroke events in the dual, claiming two of the top three finishes in both the 100 and 200. Freshman Kate Hofmeyer won the 200-back in 2:02.61 - her second-best collegiate time in the event. Fellow freshman Josefin Eriksen placed runner-up in 2:04.15.
The Wolf Pack also tallied second and third place finishes in the 100-back behind freshman Jaeger Turner (56.08) and senior Luiza Vieira (58.23). Turner's time set a personal best and marks Nevada's best time in the event this season.
"Our backstrokers - led by two freshmen in Jaeger and Kate - were impressive today," said Steketee. "We fought all the way through the meet. Josefin and Erin in particular had great spirit on deck."
Nevada placed runner-up in both relay races, setting a season-best time in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.83) while tallying its second-best time in the 400-yard medley relay (3:50.21). The Wolf Pack's 200 free relay team consisted of freshman Emma Payne, Li, Turner and sophomore Sita Kusserow.
Sophomore Teresa Baerens added three top-three finishes for the Wolf Pack. The Ottobrun, Germany, native placed second in the 100 free (51.86) and 200 IM (2:06.4), while placing third in the 50 free (24.54).
Additionally, Nevada received runner-up finishes from Eriksen in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:28.91), Kusserow in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.21), sophomore Arantxa Medina-Alegria in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.85) and junior Erin Fuss in the 100-yard butterfly (57.85).
