FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The University of Nevada women's tennis team edged out Northern Arizona on Saturday by a score of 4-3.
The Wolf Pack (5-1) has now won five straight matches with the win over the Lumberjacks (2-7). The Wolf Pack won 2-of-3 doubles matches for the early point, and snatched 3-of-6 singles matches to clinch the victory. Three singles matches went to an extended third set, and Nevada took two which proved to be the deciding factor. Head coach Guillaume Tonelli knew the girls were always right there in the match.
"We got up on them early, but this was a tough team," he said. "They came back to make it close but credit our girls for never giving up, they gave it their all out on the court."
To kick off doubles play, the tandem of Juliette Legendre and Sheila Smiley grabbed a win on court No. 3 against the team of Sarah maria Spruch and Jordan Denesik 8-3. The doubles point-clinching win came from the duo of Michelle Okhremchuk and Sheila Morales Hidalgo, as they pushed past Johanna Vang and Tatum Rochin 8-6.
Monika Magusiak moved to 6-0 in the spring after dropping T. Rochin in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 for the first singles win of the day for Nevada. After NAU tied the match at 2 apiece, Michelle Okhremchuk picked up her fourth win of the season by dropping Vang 6-7, 6-1, 6-2. The Lumberjacks again tied the score, this time at 3, when Sheila Smiley was able to bring home the match-deciding point by downing Hailey Rochin in three sets 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The Wolf Pack will be in action again tomorrow when it takes on No. 25 Arizona State, its toughest test yet of the season. That match begins at 10 am.
