Mtn. Region Results
The Wolf Pack cross country team ended the season by matching their regional ranking with an 11th place finish at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. Friday morning. The team scored 270 points, 11 points back from 10th place Montana State.
Colorado and New Mexico received automatic bids to the NCAA National Championship by finishing in first and second respectively. Colorado scored 43 points to edge out MW Champions and Mountain Region favorites New Mexico. BYU was the first team to miss an automatic bid with a third place finish and 112 points, and Northern Arizona with 149 points and Wyoming with 157 points rounded out the top-five.
"We finished agonizingly close to seventh place Utah. Finishing just 24 points away from seventh place leaves us wanting more, but we felt like we raced very solidly today," Head Coach Kirk Elias had to say about the Pack's performance.
Mountain West foe Colorado State was the third Mountain West team in the final team standings with 160 total points. They were followed by 7th place Utah who finished first out of a group of five teams within 24 points of each other. Idaho State tied Utah with 146 points, and a sixth runner tie breaker was needed to determine overall position. Weber State collected a ninth place finish with 253 points, and Montana State grabbed the last spot in the top-ten with 259 points.
Coach Elias was pleased with the way his team finished the season, "We were happy to have strong races to close out the season well. The teams who finished close to us at the Mountain West Conference Championships were far behind us today."
The Mountain West was represented with six teams at the NCAA Mountain Region Championship. New Mexico was favored to win the meet, but finished second. Wyoming was the second MW team in fifth place, and Colorado State finished sixth. Nevada was the fourth MW team overall, and finished four spots ahead of 15th place Air Force who finished one spot ahead of Nevada at the Conference Championships. Utah State finished 16th.
Racing as they have all season long, senior Demerey Kirsch and junior Emily Myers led the Pack together finishing 22nd and 23rd respectively. Kirsch crossed the line with a time of 21:48 with Myers one second behind at 21:49. Both Kirsch and Myers earned All-Region honors for their performances.
"Demerey and EmKay were very impressive today. They both ran really strong races to give us a big boost," Coach Elias had to say about his teams leaders; "Erika Root also had her best race of the season, which was great to see."
