RENO, Nev. - Eight members of the University of Nevada rifle team competed in the Junior Olympic qualifier hosted at the Nevada rifle ranges Nov. 8-9. Of the eight competitors four have qualified for the National Junior Olympics to be held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. in April.

"We had a very strong performance this weekend," head coach Fred Harvey said. "Nevada should have its best showing ever at the Junior Olympics in April."

Freshmen Sarah Jameson and Justin Nissen both qualified for the National Junior Olympic smallbore competition. Jameson led the Pack with a 588 and Nissen shot 575. Stephani Cooksey (568), Emily Capaul (568), Jessie Katsuyama (566), Jared Crews (564), Sara Tashima (557) and Gavin Au (556) also competed in smallbore.

The same eight individuals competed in air rifle on Sunday. Two freshmen, Sara Tashima and Stephanie Cooksey, led the way and have qualified to compete at the National Junior Olympic competition in April. Tashima shot 396 and Cooksey 392. Capaul (389), Jameson (379) and Katsuyama (376) also competed in the event that is comprised of 40 shots per individual

The men attempt 60 shots in air rifle and Nissen scored a 587. Crews shot 557 and Au was one shot back at 556.
