POSTGAME QUOTES: Boise State 51, Nevada 46
NEVADA
Head coach Brian Polian
Opening statement…
"Somehow we had a chance to win the game at the end but I'm not sure we deserved that with the way that we played. I'm very proud of the way that they competed. The fact we had a chance in a game like that speaks to the fact that we kept chopping. But in the end, we had no business winning that game. We did not do enough offensively and the turnovers were a killer. I'm not sure that any of those turnovers were truly on Cody. The quarterback gets more credit than he deserves and gets more blame than he deserves. Defensively in the first half, we did an awful job of adjusting and communicating. Give them credit, they made plays but we didn't help. It was just one of those nights for us. Moving forward, I told the team that we have to be very honest with ourselves, and it starts with me and the coaches. We have a lot of film to look over tomorrow. The players have to not be sensitive and have to be coached and corrected. Then we can turn our focus to Colorado State, a 4-1 team. Can't sit around and feel bad. I'm disappointed in the result in all facets but we can't change what's happened. We can only affect what's in front of us and that starts tomorrow."
On the Boise State rivalry…
"It's obviously a big rivalry, people feel strongly about it. Unfortunately we came on the short end of the stick but nights like this is what makes college football fun; packed house, entertaining game. But we came up on the short end and didn't make enough plays."
On what went wrong with the turnovers…
"Collectively, we have got to make plays and do better job. Without Cody we don't have a chance to win at the end. Could he have played better? Of course. But everyone else, players and coaches, could have done better. We have to do a better job."
On the defensive performance…
"Lack of communication. Lack of recognition. Credit to Boise State, they showed us a ton of formations tonight, different unbalanced versions than what we had seen on film. But we need to recognize. What I'm disappointed in is that I didn't feel like we pursue to the ball and we didn't tackle well. We had talked repeatedly about what a physical runner Jay Ajayi was and he broke too many tackles. You have to win situational football to beat a quality opponent and we didn't do that."
WR Hasaan Henderson
On what the team can take away from the 51-46 loss to Boise State…
"We need to be very critical of ourselves on film. We'll be watching some tomorrow and we need to get ready next week."
On the performance of Cody Fajardo…
"Other than the four interceptions, I thought Cody was great. He was very accurate on his balls, called some great audibles and he ran well. He had a great game other than that."
QB Cody Fajardo
On his performance…
"The play calling was great, I just struggled a little bit. Any time you throw four picks, you're not going to win many games, but I'm man enough to stand up here and say it's on me. My teammates did a great job of coming up to me and saying 'keep your head up, keep fighting.' I appreciate my teammates helping me and telling to stick through it. Obviously its tough turn to four times I'm just thankful for the guys in the locker room."
BOISE STATE
Head coach Bryan Harsin
On being involved in such an exciting game…
"That game was fun to be on the winning side of it. We expected to come out here and play a good football team. Nevada is a great football team at home and they have been on a roll. We didn't know it would be like this with that many points, but I am proud of the defense to come out and finish the game."
On how he thought his team played overall…
"There are things we have to improve on, but this is an interesting group, where we are. We need to eliminate the mistakes we made to ourselves and continue to play the way we have been playing. As a team, getting a victory in that tight of a game - that probably means more than anything at this point."
On the performance of QB Grant Hedrick…
"Grant did a great job leading the guys tonight. He had a lot of fire in his eyes and it was personal for him. I am really proud of him and the way he led tonight, the way he finished the game and for fighting back."
QB Grant Hedrick
On the mindset coming into the game…
"We wanted to try and have fun, get back to the basics and the fundamentals, go out and enjoy everything with our teammates and bring some energy. That was a blast out there tonight."
On what the game meant to him…
"It was personal. We didn't bring our A-game last week. We wanted to come prove something tonight and we did."
On the score of the game…
"It was a wild game. It shows we are resilient. There was a lot of momentum swings back and forth. We just kept plugging away, and it was a great win for us."
RB Jay Ajayi
On the run game…
"It was a big deal for us to get the run game going, just keep being persistent in the run game and never giving up. We talked about it at halftime, making sure we kept our heads up and that in the second half it was going to pop."
On the feeling after the win…
"This was such a big game for us. The adversity that we put ourselves through last week, the great week of practice that we had this week and playing Nevada, it is always going to be a big game for us. I like to believe that I am an emotional player and I put my heart into this game and our team. This is probably one of my favorite wins."
