Oct. 4, 2014 RENO, Nev. - The Nevada swimming and diving team kicked off a busy homecoming Saturday for the Wolf Pack, as the Silver team edged the Blue team in the Silver & Blue Intrasquad meet at the Lombardi Pool. The Silver team used event titles in the final two events - the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle relay - to post a 101-80 victory.
"This meet showed how much potential we have as a team," said head coach Abby Steketee, who guided Nevada to its best-ever finish at the Mountain West Championship last season. "Now, we'll have to train very hard to maximize that potential."
The team score was close throughout the meet until the Silver team's Sita Kusserow won the 100 fly before helping her side to a win in the final event, the 200 free relay. The relay team consisted of sophomore Arantxa Medina-Alegria, Kusserow, freshman Josefin Eriksen and freshman Kate Hofmeyer.
The Silver team posted wins in the 200-yard freestyle (Eriksen), 100-yard backstroke (Luiza Vieira), 200-yard butterfly (Kusserow), 200-yard backstroke (Eriksen), 100-yard butterfly (Kusserow) and 200-yard free relay. Eriksen, a native of Sundyberg, Sweden, set a meet-record in the 200 back.
The Blue team picked up event titles in the 200-yard medley relay (Jaeger Turner, Yawen Li, Michelle Forman and Teresa Baerens), 100-yard breaststoke (Li), 100-yard freestyle (Baerens) and the 200-yard breaststroke (Li). Li - who advanced to the NCAA Championships in three events last season - set a meet-record in the 200 breast.
Nevada will open the 2014-15 season on Oct. 24 with a quad-meet against Pacific, Simon Fraser and Fresno Pacific. Action will get underway at 5 p.m. (PT) from Stockton, Calif.
