Oct. 31, 2014 Fresno, Calif. -
The Wolf Pack cross country team finished in 6th place Friday morning at the MW Championships hosted by Fresno State at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif. Led by senior Demerey Kirsch who highlighted the Pack's performance with a ninth place finish, Nevada scored 163 points to finish in 6th place overall. New Mexico won the conference crown with 33 points, Boise State finished second with 58 points, and Wyoming grabbed the final podium spot with 79 points. The Pack was 22 points behind 5th place Colorado State (141) and 17 points ahead of 7th place Utah State (180). Nevada rival UNLV finished in 9th place with 245 points.
Nevada was picked to finish 7th in the MW coaches pre-championship poll. Nevada Head Coach Kirk Elias was pleased to see his team finish one spot higher than they were tabbed heading into the race, but he is still hoping to see his team improve, "As a team we did better today than we have been running all season. This was the best performance we have put on all year, but I still think we will continue to improve."
Senior Demerey Kirsch was the first Wolf Pack athlete to cross the line at the MW Championships finishing in ninth place with a time of 20:48. Kirsch ran alongside teammate Emily Myers before pulling away at the half way mark of the 6-kilometer race. Myers finished 16th with a time of 21:04.
Leading a second group of Wolf Pack runners, freshman Alaina Anderson crossed the line 46th with a time of 22:14. Junior Anna Preciado was right behind Anderson for a 47th place finish and a time of 22:17. Erika Root was the final scoring runner for Nevada completing the course in 22:21 for a 51st place finish.
Freshman Marissa Suan and Meagan Wood rounded out the top seven for Nevada. Suan finished 65th with a time of 22:44, and Wood crossed the line 69th with a time of 22:46. In cross country the top five runners count towards the teams total points, and the sixth and seventh place runners count towards tie-breakers and individual points. At the MW Championships teams were allowed to run nine athletes, but the eighth and ninth place finishers positions are not recorded towards overall finisher points.
"Kirsch ran a very fine race today," Coach Elias said about the Pack's top finisher, "She and Myers got out well, and Kirsch was able to run up with the front group from the halfway mark on."
