Oct. 20, 2014 RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada rifle team currently tied for 14th in the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association poll dropped a Patriot Rifle Conference home match to #5 Air Force 4681-4646 on Saturday. With the loss the Wolf Pack is 3-3 on the season and the Falcons improved to 2-0.
The Pack's 4646 is the best team score in three seasons and the 2308 in smallbore was the fifth best in the last 20 years. The 2338 in air rifle ranks among the top 10 scores in school history. Air Force shot a school record 4681.
Air Force won the smallbore part of the competition 2329-2308. The Falcon's Meredith Carpenter shot 589 to win the event followed by teammate Tyler Rico's 587. Nevada junior Greta Ochsner shot 580 to finish third. The 580 is the top score of the season by a Nevada shooter.
The Falcons claimed the air rifle 2352-2338. Pack freshman Emily Capaul tied Air Force's Kevyn Stinett for the top score with a 593. The 593 is the top score of the season for a Wolf Pack shooter and Capaul's 1168 aggregate score is the top this season on the team. Her 593 in smallbore and 575 in air rifle were both personal bests and are at the All-American level.
After a week off the Pack returns to action Oct. 31 against Jacksonville State in Fort Worth, Texas at the TCU range. On Nov. 1 Nevada will compete against TCU and Jacksonville State at the TCU range.
