Oct. 15, 2014 Final Stats RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada women's tennis team came out, played hard, and was victorious as they battled for six wins out of nine matches, on day one, in the 2014 USTA/ITA Regional Championships Hosted by New Mexico.
In doubles action, freshman Blaga Delic and senior Shiela Smiley defeated Colorado State's A. Hernandez, by a score of 8-3. Duo Shiela Morales and Clarisse Treand had a huge win over Utah's Najera, by a score of 8-7. During a back and forth battle against New Mexico State's Joyce and Thiffault, freshman Sara Korzeniecki and junior Monika Magusiak were defeated by a score of 8-5.
In singles action, four strong victories were taken by the Pack. Freshman Clarisse Treand defeated Montana State's W. Holopainen by a score of 7-5, 7-5. Blaga Delic came up strong with a clutch win over Air Force's Tran, by a score of 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. Sheila Smiley started off her individual play by overcoming Colorado State's A. Hernandez, by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Senior Juliette Legendre fought long and hard for her victory over Montana State's N. Holopainen, by a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
Sophomore Sheila Morales, who is seeded no. 6 in the singles bracket, had a bye in her first round of play, but will start up tomorrow facing Air Force's, Magday.
With a very strong first day of play in the tournament, the Pack has self-confidence and poise heading into the second day in Albuquerque.
