Final Stats
RENO, Nev. - Karlyn Jones tossed a two-hit shutout in game one as the Nevada softball team split a doubleheader with San Jose State on Saturday at Hixson Park.
Jones went the distance in the first game, allowing just two hits and facing four over the minimum. In game two, San Jose State (21-19, 5-3 WAC) got 10 hits off three Nevada (13-26, 4-5 WAC) pitchers and beat the Wolf Pack, 10-0.
Nevada had some trouble offensively in both games as the Wolf Pack had just six hits. But in game one, they came in timely fashion to give Jones all of the offense she needed. In the third inning, Chelsea Venable led off with a single and was moved to second on a bunt. Chelsea Barilli then bunted for a base hit to score pinch-runner Kortnee Wiley and give Nevada a 1-0 lead. The Wolf Pack would load the bases on Lauren Lastrapes's single but Sara Parsons drive to center was caught at the wall to end the threat.
Jones was cruising and did not allow a hit until the fifth, when Cheryl Freitas doubled. But Jones worked out of that and moved easily through the game, thanks to some strong defense, including spectacular catches by Lastrapes, going into the dugout on a foul ball, and a diving stab by Venable behind the plate.
In game two, the Spartans scored five in the first inning off Nevada starter Bailey Brewer, who struggled with control and the Wolf Pack was never able to get back into the game.
Nevada will return to action with five games next week. Nevada will play a doubleheader at UTEP on Thursday before a pivotal three-game WAC series at New Mexico State on Saturday.
