Final Stats
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Trailing 8-2 the University of Nevada (20-18, 4-4 WAC) baseball team scored five unanswered runs but the rally fell short as the Wolf Pack lost 8-7 to Sacramento State (22-18, 5-3 WAC) at John Smith Field Saturday afternoon. The Western Athletic Conference loss leaves the Pack 4-4 in conference play and 20-18 overall. The Hornets improved to 22-18 and 5-3 in the WAC.
Nevada almost completed the comeback putting runners on second and third base in the top of the ninth with none out but the next three Pack hitters failed to score the tying run as the Pack fell 8-7.
The Pack led 1-0 but Sac State scored five times in the bottom of the third inning and three more times in the fifth to take an 8-2 advantage. Nevada answered with three in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh inning but was unable to catch the Hornets.
Nevada starter Tyler Wells (3-4) allowed seven runs on six hits in four innings and suffered the loss. Brennan Leitao (4-3) earned the victory giving up five runs, three earned in his 5.2 innings on the mound. R.J. Davis (8) pitched a scoreless ninth to record his eighth save of the season.
Tommy Niebergall (2-for-4,2R), Brooks Klein (2-for-3,2R,2RBI) and Austin Byler (2-for-4,RBI) led the Pack with two hits each. Klein topped the Pack with two RBI.
Hornet second baseman Andrew Ayers had three hits and four RBI for Sacramento State.
The final game of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
