SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Nevada (20-17, 4-3 WAC) baseball team was shutout 2-0 in the first game of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at Sacramento State (21-18, 4-3 WAC) on Friday afternoon at John Smith Field. The loss snapped a four-game win streak by the Wolf Pack and it stands at 20-17. The Hornets improved to 21-18 and 4-3 in conference action.
The Hornets scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI single by Andrew Ayers. In the bottom of the eighth inning Nevada committed two errors on the same play that allowed the runner to score from first to make the final score 2-0.
Pack starter Bradey Shipley (6-3) allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings on the mound and was tagged with the loss. Sac State starter Dallas Chadwick (3-1) earned the win pitching seven shutout innings. R.J. Davis (7) earned his seventh save pitching a scoreless ninth.
Tommy Niebergall (2-for-4) had two of the Pack five hits in the game. Justin Higley (2-for-4) and Derrick Chung (2-for-4) had two hits each for the Hornets. Ayers collected the only RBI in the game.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
