LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Nevada got three home runs and a gutsy effort from Mallary Darby in the circle as the Wolf Pack took a 7-6 win from New Mexico State on Friday in the opener of a three-game WAC set.
Nevada (15-27, 5-5 WAC) got a solo home run from Lauren Lastrapes and two-run-homers from Emily Seidel and Megan Fincher as part of a 10-hit attack against New Mexico State (19-23, 0-10). Darby (7-12) went the distance, giving up six runs on seven hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch set for 3 p.m. (Pacific). The games will be broadcast in Northern Nevada on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and at NevadaWolfPack.com
The Wolf Pack took a 1-0 in the first on the fifth home run of the year by Lastrapes. But the Aggies answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame on four hits and a couple of hit batters. The inning could have been worse by Sara Parsons made a running catch on the warning track on a bases-loaded drive by Malena Padilla to get Nevada out of the inning.
The Pack chipped away at the 5-1 deficit, getting two in the second inning on the first collegiate home run by the freshman Seidel, a two-run shot with two outs. Nevada got two more in the third - a sacrifice fly by Megan Fincher and an infield RBI single by Sam Puzey - to tie it at 5.
Meanwhile, Darby settled in, retiring 11 of 12 at one point.
Nevada took the lead for good in the fifth on Fincher's third home run of the year, a two-run shot to left.
The Aggies got one run back on a solo homer by Briana Tovio-Asato in the bottom of the fifth. But Darby worked out of two-on jams in the sixth and the seventh to get the complete-game win.
