Nevada Game Notes
Final Stats
EL PASO, Texas - Sara Parsons ripped a three-run double and Karlyn Jones pitched a complete game to give Nevada a 9-2 win over UTEP in game two of a doubleheader Thursday at Helen of Troy Field.
Karley Hopkins went 4-for-6 on the day to lead the way offensively for Nevada, which dropped game one of the doubleheader, 2-0.
Jones improved to 6-4 on the year with the win as she gave up eight hits, two runs and struck out four without walking a batter.
Nevada is now 14-27 on the year and will look to improve upon its 4-5 Western Athletic Conference record on Friday when it opens up a three-game set at New Mexico State. UTEP moved to 13-28 with the split.
Camilla Carrera, the nation's leading home run hitter, staked UTEP to a 1-0 lead with a shot in the first inning and she gave the Miners a 2-0 lead with another shot - her third of the day and 27th of the year - in the third.
Nevada finally got the bats going in the fifth. Chelsea Barilli walked and then stole second, with the throw going into centerfield, allowing Barilli to take third. Karley Hopkins drove her in with a single to left, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Caylin Campbell singled up the middle and Lauren Lastrapes followed with a single to left to load the bases with nobody out.
After Sara Parsons lined out to third, Megan Fincher lifted a sac fly to right to plate Hopkins and tie the game. Sam Puzey then singled to left and Nevada took the lead for the first time at 3-2.
Nevada came looking for more in the sixth as Emily Seidel singled to lead things off. Barilli missed on two attempts to bunt her over and ended up drawing a walk to put two one with nobody out and chase UTEP starter Cynthia Villastrigo. Hopkins drew a walk off reliever Laura Ramos to load the bases.
Campbell and Lastrapes then drew back-to-back walks to score two more runs and keep the bases loaded with nobody out. Sara Parsons then unloaded them with a three-run double to right-center, her WAC-leading 13th-double of the year. That made the score 8-2 and Parsons extended to 9-2 when she stole third and later scored on a wild pitch.
In game one, senior Mallary Darby threw a strong game for the Wolf Pack but two pitches spelled the difference in the game. In the first inning, Darby's 1-1 pitch to Carrera was sent over the fence in left for a home run. In the sixth, Chelsea Troupe hit a 3-2 pitch out to right-center to give UTEP all the offense it would need.
Nevada had opportunities, especially early, off UTEP starter Colleen Hohman. Karley Hopkins singled and was stranded in scoring position in the first inning. In the second, Chelsea Venable singled with two outs and Emily Seidel doubled but both were left in scoring position. In the first, Hopkins singled again and was left stranded on second again.
Darby (6-12) went the distance, giving up five hits and the two runs while striking out six with no walks.
