LAS VEGAS - The University of Nevada baseball team pounded out seven hits to UNLV's six, but fell to the Rebels 5-4 in the first game of a three-game series at Wilson Stadium Friday.
The Wolf Pack fell to 5-4 with the loss, while UNLV improved to 6-4. Nevada left eight runners on base, including two in the top of the eighth, when the Pack pulled to within one run of UNLV.
Kyle Hunt walked to begin the inning with the score 5-2, and was followed on base by Brett Jones in the same fashion. Jameson Rowe, who entered the lineup as a defensive substitution, doubled to left-center field on the second pitch he saw to score Hunt. Austin Byler was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.
A sacrifice fly from Brooks Klein scored Jones from third to make the score 5-4, with Rowe advancing to third on the play. Cameron Brooks ran for Byler and stole second to bring Joe Kohan to the plate with the go-ahead run in scoring position. He struck out swinging. With two down and runners on second and third, Carlos Escobar Jr. popped out in foul territory to UNLV catcher Scott Tomassetti to end the inning.
Byler scored Nevada's first run with his second home run of the season, a solo shot in the top of the second. Klein also homered, hitting a solo bomb over the right-field fence in the fourth. It was his second home run of the season.
Nevada starter Bradey Shipley took the loss and fell to 2-1 after going five innings and giving up four earned. He struck out five Rebel hitters and walked two. Joe Robinson won for the Rebels, leveling his record at 1-1.
Zack Hartman came into the game in the eight and pitched the final two innings for his second save of the season.
The two teams will play Saturday at 2:05 p.m. at Wilson Stadium. Tyler Wells is scheduled to take the ball for the Pack, looking to end a three-game losing streak.
