Final Stats

RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada baseball team fell 13-5 to UC Santa Barbara Saturday at Peccole Park.

The Wolf Pack scored one in the second, one in the fourth and three in the ninth, but dropped to 8-6 with the loss. UCSB improved to 7-7.

Most of the Gauchos damage was done in the seventh, when they scored seven times on seven hits. Six of the hits were singles, as the only extra-base hit, a double, came from UCSB's leading hitter Brett Vertigan.

Nevada starter Tyler Wells lost his first game of the season, going six innings and giving up five earned runs. He fell to 2-1 overall.

Offensively, Brett Jones continued his hot hitting with a 2-3 afternoon, raising his team-leading average to .421. Jones doubled in the first for his sixth extra-base hit of the season. Carlos Escobar Jr. drove in his fourth run of the series in the second, scoring Brooks Klein with a single to center field.

Austin Byler scored his 10th run of the year in the fourth on a Garret Yrigoyen single. Three in the ninth for the Pack came on one hit and three hit batters. The hit was a Ryan Teel single to the shortstop that scored Ray Daniels. Both came into the game as pinch hitters in the seventh inning.

UCSB starter Andrew Vasquez went eight innings and gave up one earned run. He struck out eight Wolf Pack hitters in his second win of the season. Elliot Van Gaver, Sean Prihar, Bryan Suarez and Daniel Levine all saw time as relievers on Saturday.

The series will be decided on Sunday, as Nevada and UCSB will meet again at Peccole Park at 1 p.m.
