SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Falling behind early, the University of Nevada baseball team dropped an 8-4 decision to the Santa Clara Broncos Tuesday at Stephen Schott Stadium.
The loss dropped the Wolf Pack to 5-3, while the Broncos improved to 7-2.
Nevada starter Dan Levine struggled early, going a third of an inning and giving up three runs in his second start of the season. Three walks from Levine allowed Santa Clara to jump ahead of the Pack early. Nevada used six pitchers in the game and matched Santa Clara with eight hits, but was unable to rebound from falling behind early.
Santa Clara led throughout and was up 8-0 after five innings.
The Pack had chances to score early, as Jay Anderson reached third with two outs in the fourth. The inning ended on a Carlos Escobar Jr. groundout to third. Loading the bases in the sixth, Nevada came away empty handed again when Brett Jones hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
All four of Nevada's runs came in the last two innings.
Three came in the top of the eighth. Jones singled with the bases loaded, scoring Anderson, Kyle Hunt and Thomas Niebergall. Jones was credited with two RBI on the play, bringing his season total to six. He leads the Pack in that category.
In the ninth, three consecutive walks to begin the inning loaded the bases for Nevada. Paul Twinning came into the game in relief to record the final three outs and earn his second save of the season. He allowed one run on an Anderson sacrifice fly to left, scoring Cameron Brooks.
Santa Clara left-handed starter Powell Fansler went seven innings without giving up a run to earn his fourth win of the season. Levine took the loss to fall to 0-1 (10.80 ERA).
Nevada will take the field again on Friday, against rival UNLV at 6:05 p.m. in Las Vegas.
