SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Nevada softball team committed four errors and left nine runners on base in an 8-1 loss to UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at the Gaucho Classic.
The loss dropped Nevada to 4-11 on the year while UCSB improved to 6-10. The game concluded play for Nevada in the tournament and the Wolf Pack will return to action on Friday when it opens play in the San Diego Classic.
UCSB jumped out early on Nevada, plating five runs in the first inning on seven hits and two Wolf Pack errors. The Gauchos added another run in the second off Nevada reliever Karlyn Jones.
Nevada got on the board in the bottom of the second as Megan Fincher and Ashley Butera each had singles to start the frame. After a popout and a strikeout, Chelsea Barilli was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Karley Hopkins drew a walk to score Fincher but Caylin Campbell grounded out to end the threat.
UCSB added an unearned run in the third to extend the lead to 7-1.
Nevada got offense but was unable to produce a timely hit as the Wolf Pack stranded nine runners in the game.
Brewer took the loss as she gave up five runs (only two earned) on five hits. Jones pitched well in relief, striking out 10, walking one and lowering her ERA from 9.69 to 6.06 as two of the three runs she allowed were unearned.
