The University of Nevada cross country team placed second at its final home meet of the season Saturday night at the Nevada Twilight hosted at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks, Nev.
Nevada competed against Utah and UNLV in the collegiate open race which was one of 11 races conducted as a part of the Twilight event. The other races were all high school- or junior high school-level races.
Utah won the collegiate race with 20 points over Nevada's 41 and UNLV took third with 65. Utah also won the individual honors with Alyssa Abbott running a time14:41.
The meet was Nevada's second of the year, but it was the first for a number of the Wolf Pack's top-lineup harriers. Sophomore Johanna Olsson was the Pack's top finisher placing fifth with a time of 15:15. Olsson transferred to Nevada from a college in Taby, Sweden and was running in her first race with the Wolf Pack.
Also running in her first race for the Pack was freshman Demerey Kirsch, a local product who graduated from Reno High School in 2010 and redshirted last season with Nevada. Kirsch placed seventh with a time of 15:20. In just her second collegiate meet of her career, freshman Caitlin Devitt-Payne placed eighth, running 15:23. Devitt-Payne placed fourth in the Nevada Chase Race last weekend in her first division I competition.
"I was very pleased with the way we ran tonight," head coach Kirk Elias said. "We set a goal to step up this week from the last meet. We not only did that, but made a huge step forward in our development for the season. Almost every runner who ran both meets improved from last week. We are really young team, and we are only going to get better. We really want to be a good team come the end of October when it's time to compete in championship meets."
Next in for the Pack was senior Gloria Sosa, ninth at 15:25. Freshman Katie Romanko ran 15:37 to place 12th with senior Jenifer McEntire placing 18th at 16:08. Next came sophomore Amber Karnofel running 16:14 placing 20th followed by junior Katarina Ratkowiak in 22nd at 16:31. Two final freshmen rounded out the Wolf Pack lineup with Riley Kellermeyer placing 23rd at 17:10 and Lauren Hunsaker at 26th with 18:01.
Nevada will have a couple of weeks before it competes again. Nevada will travel down to Las Vegas, Nev. to compete in the Desert Invitational on Oct. 1.
