Box Score RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada baseball team (17-24, 6-7 WAC) defeated the Hawai’i Rainbows (25-20. 10-4 WAC) 10-0 today in a seven inning run-rule victory. Troy Marks (2-3, 3.88 ERA) was brilliant in a winning effort, pitching his first career complete-game shutout.
Marks held the Rainbows hitless through three innings before giving up his first hit to Collin Bennett (1-for-3) in the fourth. Marks, who struck out four hitters, allowed just two more hits both coming in the seventh inning.
Marks loaded the bases in the seventh with one out, but struck out pinch-hitter Matt Harrison for the second out and retired Breland Almadova (0-for-4) for the final out of the game.
The Pack plated its first runs in the third inning on a two-run single by Braden Shipley (2-for-3, 3 RBI) and Shipley later scored on a Brock Stassi (3-for-4, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI) RBI single. The freshman shortstop has seven RBI in the first two games of this series.
Nevada continued to pour on the runs scoring two more in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Brian Barnett had three hits and two RBI in the game and Garrett Yrigoyen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Pack totaled 13 hits in the contest including five hits and one triple.
Jeremy Cole (3-4, 4.34 ERA) will start game one of tomorrow’s doubleheader and LHP Brock Stassi (1-1, 8.80 ERA) will take the mound in game two.
