Box Score SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Nevada Wolf Pack (21-29, 10-12 WAC) was defeated 11-10 by the San Jose State Spartans (33-22, 11-11 WAC) on a bases-loaded wild pitch in game one of today's doubleheader.
LHP Brock Stassi (2-2, 7.79 ERA) earned the no-decision and allowed four runs on six hits and two walks in 3.1 innings of work. Stassi allowed a leadoff double Jacob Valdez to start the second, and Valdez came around to score when Tyler Christian singled through the left side to five the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
The Pack ran into trouble in the fourth inning as Stassi exited the game with one out and runners on first and second base and Jayson McClaren came in to pitch.
McClaren retired one of the three hitters he faced on a fielder's choice but walked the other two before handing it over to Sean Prihar. Prihar got out of the inning, but not before allowing a two-run single that gave San Jose State a 5-4 lead.
Nevada answered when with two outs in the top of the fifth, Stassi (1-for-3,R,RBI) hit his third triple of the season and scored when Nick Melino (1-for-2,2RBI,R) hit an RBI single back up the middle to make it 5-5.
The tie quickly diminished though as the Spartans answered with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth.
San Jose State Closer Zach Jones entered the game in the sixth inning in a non-save situation with a 10-5 lead. After striking out Garrett Yrigoyen (1-for-4,RBI,R) to start the inning, the Pack rallied to score five runs on two hits, two walks and two hit batsmen to tie the game at 10-10.
Tim Culligan (1-3, 8.24 ERA) took the loss after allowing one run on two hits in two innings of work. Culligan was facing Jason Martin (0-for-3) with two outs and bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh when a wild pitch bounced left toward the San Jose State dugout and allowed Andrew Rodriguez (2-for-4,RBI,3R) to score the winning run.
Jeremy Cole (4-4, 4.15 ERA) will start game two for Nevada.
