Box Score RENO, NEV. - The University of Nevada baseball team (12-20, 1-3 WAC) defeated the New Mexico State Aggies (27-10, 5-4 WAC) 9-0 today in the Wolf Pack's WAC home opener.
RHP Tom Jameson (3-4, 5.43 ERA) was dominant through nine shutout innings allowing just five hits on no runs while striking out two New Mexico State (NMSU) hitters. Jameson retired the first nine hitters he faced and struck out the last batter he faced to end the game and complete his first career shutout at Nevada.
Nevada's offense got started early scoring two runs in the first and one run in the second. Waylen Sing Chow (2-for-4, R) singled in the first and advanced to third on an error by NMSU right fielder Bryan Karraker. Brock Stassi (2-for-3, RBI) followed Sing Chow's single with an RBI bunt single and scored himself on an RBI double by Brian Barnett (3-for-5, 2 RBI).
The Wolf Pack added another run in the second when Garrett Yrigoyen (2-for-4, 3 RBI) leadoff the frame with his second home run of the year. Yrigoyen hit a lined shot over the left field wall on the first pitch he saw from NMSU starter Dan Reid.
The Pack plated five runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Brian Barnett, a two-run double by Nick Melino (1-for-4, 3 RBI) and a two-run single by Yrigoyen.
Melino also drove in one run on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth. His RBI-double in the big seventh inning ended an 0-32 slump.
Tomorrow's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. with Jeremy Cole (2-3, 3.86 ERA) starting game one and Troy Marks (0-3, 4.28 ERA) starting game two.
