RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada softball team defeated Boston College 14-13 in 10 innings in its first game of the Wolf Pack Classic Friday.
In the first game of the tournament, DePaul defeated Boston College 7-5.
In Nevada's second game, the Pack played two and a half innings against DePaul before the game was called due to darkness. It will not be made up. Nevada improved to 4-12 with the wild win against Boston College.
Against the Eagles, Boston College jumped out to a 4-0 lead after an inning of play, getting a three-run home run from their left fielder, Tory Speer, in the top half of the inning.
The Pack, which was the designated visiting team in the game, answered with one in the second, and fought their way back throughout the entire game.
Chelsea Venable hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the top half of the sixth. The transfer from Feather River College took a fastball on the outer half of the plate for a ride over the fence in right-center field.
The score was 7-6 DePaul after six complete innings.
Climbing all the way back to tie the score in the top half of the seventh, the Wolf Pack got the equalizing run on a sacrifice fly by Kortnee Wiley. Nevada would get four more before the inning was out.
Boston College would not go quietly though, as they scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. The eighth inning went by without either team advancing a runner home.
In Nevada's half of the ninth, the Pack scored twice, but failed to retain the lead once more. Boston College scored twice in their half to tie the game at 13.
In the top of the 10th, Megan Fincher singled home what would be the winning run in the form of Alex Arciniega.
Danielle Patrick homered and went 4-for-5 with five RBI in the game to lead Nevada, which had 20 hits. Karley Hopkins, Britton Murdock and Erin Jones each had three hits in the game.
Mallary Darby got the win, improving her record to 4-6 on the year. She went eight innings, allowed seven earned runs, walked three and struck out six BC hitters.
The Wolf Pack will return to action against DePaul at 12:45 p.m. Saturday at Hixson Park. Nevada will take on BC at 3 p.m. The first game of the day Saturday will pit Boston College against DePaul at 10:30 a.m.
