BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of Nevada baseball team (4-12) lost the final game of its four game road trip to the No. 15 California Golden Bears (13-5) 2-0 today.
RHP Mark Joukoff turned in another strong performance scattering six hits and two runs over seven innings. Joukoff also struck out three batters in his fourth consecutive start of six or more innings.
California scored in the first inning when catcher Chadd Krist doubled to right field, allowing short stop Marcus Semien who drew a one out walk to come around and score. They added another run in the third inning when left fielder Vince Bruno scored on a Tony Renda RBI ground out to Mark Joukoff.
Nevada had opportunities to score in a game that it outhit its opponent, but saw threats ended in the sixth and seventh innings by line drives hit right at the Bears short stop and second baseman.
The Pack also came close to tying it on a near home run by Brock Stassi. With high winds blowing in from right field, Stassi hit a ball that was caught on the warning track with one runner on to end the eighth inning.
Rickey Denham pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out one of the three batters he faced.
Nick Melino was 3-4 with three singles and has now reached base safely in all of the Pack's 16 games this season.
The Wolf Pack takes on Saint Mary's at Peccole Park tomorrow before heading to Washington for three games against the University of Washington Mar. 25-27 and one game against Seattle University Mar. 28.
