RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada softball team fell to FIU 10-1 at Hixson Park Saturday, in their second game of the Nevada Classic.
In the first game of the day, the New Mexico Lobos defeated the Boston College Eagles 4-1. In game two Saturday, played immediately before Nevada took on FIU, New Mexico defeated FIU 9-4.
In the final game of the day, Nevada was unable to hold down the Panthers' offense, as they plated their 10 runs on 12 hits.
The Wolf Pack fell to 6-17 on the year, while FIU improved to 12-12.
Mallary Darby got her fifth consecutive start in the circle for Nevada against the Panthers, who sent Jen Gniadek into the circle to face the Pack's hitters.
After striking out the Panther's first batter, third baseman Jessy Alfonso, Darby surrendered a one-out, two-run home run to Ashley McClain to stake FIU to a 2-0 lead. The Pack was unable to answer with any offense in the bottom half of the inning.
Nevada put a runner on third base with two outs in the third, but was unable to push anything across.
After three complete innings, the score was FIU 2, Nevada 0. FIU added two runs in the top of the fourth, including a Brie Rojas solo homer, to increase its lead to four.
Nevada responded in the bottom half of the frame with one run on a Megan Fincher single to left field. The Pack left two runners on base, as Jayme King struck out with runners at second and third to end the inning.
One more run in the fifth and five in the sixth from FIU put the game out of reach for good.
Play in the classic will conclude Sunday as New Mexico takes on Boston College at 9:30 a.m., with Nevada facing the Lobos at approximately 11:30 a.m.
