CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The University of Nevada softball team (3-10) fell 6-2 to the Fordham Rams (7-7) in its second game on day two at the Cathedral City Classic.
Karley Hopkins got the Nevada offense started with a double to the opposite field to lead off the bottom of the first. It was the seventh double of the season for the freshman, who has been atop the Nevada lineup since game one of the season. Hopkins scored Nevada's first run on a Britton Murdock single later in the inning and Murdock was brought home on a Megan Fincher single two batters later.
Fordham came right back at the Wolf Pack with four runs in the top half of the second, included bases-loaded, bases-clearing triple by Jocelyn Dearborn. Two more from the Rams in the top half of the third, and a three up, three down bottom half for Nevada made the score 6-2 Fordham after three complete.
The margin stayed four runs until the conclusion, as Nevada was unable to put any more runs on the board against Fordham starter Chelsea Plimpton.
Nevada put a runner on in the fourth inning, as Lauren Lastrapes drew a base-on-balls, and the fifth inning, on a Kortnee Wiley single up the middle. Plimpton worked her way out of any trouble en route to her fourth win of the year.
She went seven complete, giving up six hits and walking three Pack batters.
Nevada will take on Syracuse at 9 a.m. and Utah at 11 a.m. in a doubleheader Sunday to close out the tournament. Against the Utes,
Nevada will look to avenge a 12-8 loss earlier in the year.
