The University of Nevada got an early start to the 2012 indoor season, competing at the Jacksons Open at the Jacksons Indoor Track hosted by Boise State Saturday. No team scores were recorded in the meet, but Nevada turned in a number of top performances.
The Wolf Pack recorded 17 top-five finishes for the meet, with seven runner-up spots and one event win. The Pack's lone winner came in the high jump with senior Nicole Williams. Williams, fresh off finishing her eligibility from women's basketball, was competing in the indoor high jump for the first time in her collegiate career and cleared a mark of 1.70-meters (5'7.00"). Behind Williams, La Tijera Avery cleared the same mark, but with more misses finished second.
Deborah Amoah placed second in the long jump with a mark of 5.77-meters (18'16.25"), leading a group of four Wolf Pack athletes who placed in the top-15. Nicole Williams placed seventh at 5.30-meters (17'4.75"), La Tijera Avery ninth 5.23-meters (17'2.00") and Alexa Anderson 15th at 5.03-meters (16'6.00"). Anderson also placed third in the pentathlon scoring 3,122 points. Casey Gray also scored a second-place finish for the field group in the pole vault, clearing a mark of 3.20-meters (10'6.00").
On the track, Nevada was led by the 4x400-meter relay team who ran a 3:53.54 to place second. The relay team was composed of Tanisha Hawkins, Christina Smith, Shanee Martin and Anjelica Earls. Earls also placed fourth in the 200-meters with a time of 24.80 and fifth in the 60-meters at 7.69.
New faces to the Wolf Pack this season also fared well in the sprints. Kashae Knox placed sixth in the 60-meters (7.70) and 10th in the 200-meters (25.41) and Tanisha Hawkins placed fourth in the 400-meters (57.68).
The distance crew was not to be left out of the meet either. Running the 3,000-meters for only the second time in her career, Sam Diaz placed second running 9:58.81 with Gloria Sosa placing fifth at 10:50.40. Christina Smith placed second in the 800-meters (2:21.84) ahead of Anne Underwood in third (2:21.90) and Lyndsey Ciabattari at fifth (2:26.44).
