Team & Player Notes
Pack And Aces Play Silver City Classic Before 3631 Fans: The University of Nevada and Reno Aces Baseball Club played the Silver City Classic, an exhibition game at Aces Ballpark on Tuesday night before 3631 fans. The Aces are the Triple A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. When the game ended after eight innings the Aces had won by a score of 11-1. The contest was played using spring training rules as Aces pitchers were used by both teams and the game lasted eight innings.
A fundraiser for the Nevada Dugout Club, the Aces presented a check for $15,000 to the University in the bottom of the fourth inning. The funds will directly benefit the Wolf Pack baseball program.
Nevada's lone run came in the sixth inning when left fielder Waylen Sing Chow tripled down the right field line with two down and freshman second baseman Cullen Mahoney followed with an RBI single.
The Pack played 12 position players which included Sam Bias a member of the Nevada softball team. Bias saw two innings of action defensively in left field.
Third baseman Garrett Yrigoyen collected the first Nevada hit of the game in the third inning with an infield single. Center fielder Westley Moss reached on a bunt single in the fourth inning as the Pack totaled four hits on the night.
Kort Ranked In WAC Top 15: Senior first baseman Shaun Kort ranks in the top 10 in six offensive categories in Nevada history and now has moved into the Western Athletic Conference career record book. Kort’s 62 career doubles and 199 career RBI rank 12th all-time in the WAC.
Lon Yamaguchi (NM, 1996-99) and Eric Arnould (Rice,1999-02) are the next two on the doubles list with 63 and 64 respectivley. Yamaguchi and Todd Takayousi (Hawai`i,1988-91) are tied for 11th with 203 RBI.
Kort Climbing Nevada Career Charts: Nevada senior first baseman Shaun Kort continues to climb the Wolf Pack all-time charts in his fourth season in the program. Kort currently ranks in the top 10 in six categories and could move into the top 10 in two others.
TEAM: After two weather postponements head coach Gary Powers coached 1,500th game at Nevada vs. Seattle on Apr. 2 which was a 12-10 victory...Nevada won its 400th game at Peccole Park with a 5-4 victory over Seattle on Apr. 4...Nevada swept a series for the first time this year winning all 3 games from Seattle Apr. 2-3...Nevada’s 40 stolen bases leads the WAC and is more 13 more than LA Tech’s 27...Nevada won 2-of-3 games from #18 UC Irvine...Head coach Gary Powers is in his 28th season and is the longest tenured coach in the history of Nevada athletics...Powers won his 800th game at Nevada last season when the Pack defeated Oregon 6-5 on March 12, 2009...Nevada ranks fourth in hitting (.302), third in pitching (5.54 ERA) and third in fielding (.965) in the WAC...Nevada opened the season with eight in a row on the road and posted a 5-3 mark...Nevada was picked to finish 6th in the preseason coaches’ poll.
AT THE PLATE: DH/P-Brock Stassi leads the WAC with a .558 on base percentage and 5 triples...Stassi ranks 52nd in batting(.432), 13th in triples(5), 7th in on base percentage(.558) and 20th in slugging percentage(.790) in NCAA I ...Stassi has started at DH and pitcher twice the season at CSUB(3/13) and vs. UC Irvine(3/28)...Stassi’s first hit of 2009 and 2010 were home runs... ON THE MOUND: LHP-Brock Stassi and LHP-Chris Garcia lead the Pack with 3 wins each which is tied for 5th in the WAC...Stassi missed his start last week as the UC Davis game was postponed due to weather but is scheduled to start Sunday at NMSU...Stassi struck out a career-high 11 in a 1-0 victory at CSUB(3/13) tossing 7 shutout innings...Stassi pitched his first complete game for Nevada at Oregon(3/20, 7-inning game) but suffered the loss...RHP-Jeremy Cole made his first start vs. #18 UCI and tossed 8 innings allowing 4 runs on 8 hits to earn the win and received a no decision in his start last week vs. Seattle giving up 4 runs, 1 earned in 6 innings...Cole(2.38ERA), Garcia(2.54) and Stassi(3.53ERA) rank 3rd, 4th and 6th in the WAC in ERA...Cole(.216) and Garcia(.245) are 2nd and 5th in opponent batting average in the conference...Garcia won his second game of the season giving up 2 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings in a 5-3 victory over #18 UCI(3/26)...RHP-Beau Witsoe earned his first career save for the Pack tossing 3 innings vs. #18 UCI(3/26) allowing a run...Witsoe, RHP-Tyler Graham and and Cole are tied for second on the team with 2 wins each...Graham entered the game with bases loaded and no out vs. Seattle and retired the side and eventually earned the win as the Pack scored a run in the 9th to win 5-4...Graham tossed a scoreless 9th vs. #18 UCI(3/27) to earn his team leading 3rd save which is tied for third in the WAC...Twice Graham has recorded two inning saves this season at Santa Clara (2/19) and at UC Davis (3/1) not allowing a runner to reach base in either outing and if you add the Seattle game has pitched 7 innings of perfect baseball in 3 outings ...Cole has 2 saves on the season which is tied for 6th in the conference...Cole’s saves have also been longer outings, 3 innings at Santa Clara(2/20) and two innings at CSUB(3/13)...Garcia earned the win at Pacific allowing one run on five hits and struck out seven which is one off his career high...RHP-Jayson McClaren and Cole lead the team 9 appearances...RHP-Rickey Denham has made 4 starts this season...Three of Nevada’s four pitchers that had Tommy John Surgery last season have pitched Bryan Suarez, Tyler Rogstad and Anthony Fagan while Daniel Tinlin is expected to miss all of 2010...Seven different pitchers have earned wins this year...Pack pitchers have allowed 17-of-48(35%) of inherited runners to score.
