DENVER - Nevada's Gina Deckard and Fresno State's Rosario Sanchez have been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of March 8-14.
Deckard, a junior from Culver City, Calif. (Culver City HS), finished first in the 100-meter hurdles at the Aggie Open in Davis, Calif. over the weekend. Deckard's time of 13.98 seconds ranks first in the WAC and fourth in the nation, and nearly cracked Nevada's top-10 list in the event.
Sanchez, a sophomore from Selma, Calif. (Selma HS), won the shot put and the discus in a dual versus Cal Poly last weekend. Sanchez's shot put heave of 47 feet, 1.25 inches (14.36m) ranks fourth in the nation. The sophomore's discus toss of 137 feet, 11.75 inches (42.06 meters) was more than 16 feet beyond the nearest competitor, good for 23rd nationally. Both marks are first in the WAC.
