PALO ALTO, Calif. – Mallary Darby tossed a complete game as the Nevada softball team beat Sacramento State 6-4 on Saturday at the Stanford Nike Invitational.
The Wolf Pack fell to No. 11 Stanford 10-2 in the second game of the day.
Nevada, now 3-4 on the season, got the bats going early against the Hornets. The Wolf Pack scored twice in the first as Britton Murdock and Kelsey Starr each smacked an RBI double.
After Sac State tied it with two runs in the bottom of the first, the Wolf Pack opened things up with a four-run second inning. Danielle Patrick led off with a single before Amanda Nims slammed an RBI double. After Chelsea Barilli and Noelle Micka walked to load the bases, Nims scored on a wild pitch to give Nevada a 4-2 lead. Sam Bias then singled, plating Barilli and Micka to make it 6-2.
Darby (2-3) settled down after the first inning as she gave up just two runs and four hits over the final six innings to get her second complete game of the season. For the game, she gave up six hits, four runs and struck out seven without walking a batter.
Nevada jumped out in front of Stanford in game two on the day as Bias crushed her first home run of the year – a two-run shot – to give the Pack a two-run lead in the first inning.
But Stanford answered with two runs of their own and then proceeded to score in every inning off Katie Holverson en route to the win.
The Pack’s downfall against the Cardinal was its defense as three errors led to four unearned runs.
Nevada returns to action on Sunday against Illinois (9 a.m.) and UC Riverside (11:15 a.m.). Both games will be broadcast on Fox Sports Radio 1450 AM.
