Erie, Colo. – Fueled by freshman Joyce Chong, the Nevada women’s golf team is tied for fourth after 36 holes at the Heather Farr Memorial Invitational, hosted by Colorado.
Chong fired back-to-back 74s on Friday and is tied for eighth place, seven strokes off the lead. Teammate Lauren Hernadez is tied for 16th, five shots back of Chong and 13 off the pace.
Nevada went low in the morning round, putting together a 6-over 294 as a team to sit alone in third place. But the Pack fell back in the afternoon as weather delays came into play and Nevada shot a 317. The Pack is eight shots back of third-place Fresno State and 21 shots off the lead held by the host school.
“It was a heck of a round in the morning and then we gave it all back in the afternoon,” Wolf Pack coach Chad Spencer said. “We had three separate weather delays and, unfortunately, we let that bother us. But overall, I’m happy.”
All of Nevada’s players went backward in round 2 except for Chong. Hernandez was just one shot off from her first-round 76
“I’m very proud of Joyce,” Spencer said. “That is a heck of a round in those conditions. And Lauren hung around well. But we needed another good number or two to put it together and we couldn’t do it.
“That being said, the weather is supposed to be great in the morning and we’ll go out and play hard and see what we can do in the final round.”
Fresno State’s Louisa Lies leads overall at 3-under.
