With the win, Nevada …
- Improved to 6-0 on the season, 496-434-33 overall (104th season) and 116-94 as an FBS school.
- Coach Chris Ault improved to 212-96-1 in his 26-year career.
- Improved its advantage in the all-time series to 15-8-2. Nevada has won eight of its last nine against San Jose state, including three in a row.
BEST START: At 6-0, this extends Nevada’s best start in its FBS history (since 1992). The 6-0 start also marks Nevada’s best start since the 1991 team went 12-0 to start the season. This is Nevada’s sixth 5-0 start in the history of the program.
WAC START: With the win in its first Western Athletic Conference game of the season, Nevada is now 7-4 all-time in WAC openers and 8-3 all-time in WAC home openers.
KAEPERNICK HITS NCAA MARK: Nevada senior quarterback Colin Kaepernick became the fourth player in NCAA history to pass for at least 8,000 yards and rush for at least 3,500 yards in a career. He entered the game 46 rushing yards shy of the achievement. The other three players to do so: The three other players to accompish the feat are: Antwaan Randle El, Indiana, 1998-01 (3,895 rushing, 7,469 passing); Joshua Cribbs, Kent St., 2001-04 (3,670 rushing, 7,169 passing); and Brad Smith, Missouri, 2002-05 (4,289 rushing, 8,799 passing).
MOCH SHATTERS TFL RECORD: Nevada senior defensive Dontay Moch recorded 4.0 tackles for loss on the night and in doing so, broke the Western Athletic Conference and school record for career tackles for loss. He now has 51.0 TFLs in his career, which is better than Ezra Butler’s previous mark of 50.5.
KAEPERNICK PASSES VARGAS, GATLIN: Nevada senior quarterback Colin Kaepernick entered the night just seven yards behind Wolf Pack Hall of Famer Chris Vargas for fourth place in career passing and Kaepernick passed him on the Pack’s first drive. Kaepernick later passed Gatlin for third place all-time. The only players ahead of Kaepernick now are Eric Beavers (second place, 8,629) and leader David Neill (10,901).
TAUA GOES OVER 100: Taua also went over the 100-yard mark for the fifth consecutive game and for the 22nd time in his career. The 22 career 100-yard effort leads all active rushers in the country.
TAUA PASSES CHANCE (TWICE): With a 1-yard touchdown in the first half, Vai Taua tied Chance Kretschmer for fifth all-time at Nevada in rushing touchdowns at 35. Taua moved past Kretschmer in the second half when he ripped a 73-yard TD run in the third quarter and a 4-yarder in the fourth to give him 37 rushing TDs in his career.
Taua entered the game 163 yards shy of Kretschmer for fourth place on Nevada’s all-time rushing list. Kretschmer had 3,782 yards in his career. Taua passed Kretschmer in the fourth quarter as he finished with 15 carries for 169 yards and three touchdowns
SCORING FIRST: Nevada has now scored on each of its opening drives this season (five touchdowns, 1 field goal). The Wolf Pack has received the opening kick in the first four games but UNLV won the toss last week and elected to receive. After the Pack defense forced a three-and-out, Nevada drive the down the field and scored on a 16-yard run by Colin Kaepernick. San Jose State won the toss on Saturday and deferred to the second half as Nevada received the opening kickoff and marched down the field in five plays.
WAC SPORTS NETWORK DEBUT: Next week’s game between Nevada and Hawaii will mark the debut of the Wolf Pack on the newly created WAC Sports Network. The broadcast can be seen in Northern Nevada on KAME My 21. The WAC Sports Network is delivered via 24 affiliates in 16 different demographic market areas, covering nearly 10 million households. Guy Haberman will have the call with former Arizona and San Jose State coach Dick Tomey providing analysis and Lauren Mickler on the sidelines.
ET CETERA: San Jose State won the opening coin toss and elected to defer … Nevada received the opening kickoff and defended the north goal … Zack Madonick recovered his first career fumble … Duke Williams made his second career interception … Brandon Wimberly has now caught a pass in 19 straight games … Sophomore guard Christian Barker has started all 19 games of his career … Nevada went more than five total quarters in between punts as Brad Langley’s punt in the second quarter was Nevada’ first since Sept. 25 at BYU in the fourth quarter.
QUARTERBACK CLUB: This week’s Quarterback Club will return to the Peppermill be held at Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City. The event is sold out. Ault will review last week's game and go over game film at each game. He will also introduce players from the team and hold a question and answer session with the fans. The luncheons are open to the public. Doors at the Peppermill will open at 11:30 a.m. and the luncheon program begins at noon. Luncheon cost is $17 at the door. The room will be announced the day of the luncheon. The 2010 Quarterback Club Luncheons will be held each Monday following Nevada football games with luncheons scheduled for Sept. 13, 20, 27; Oct. 4, 11, 18; and Nov. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.
NEXT UP: The Wolf Pack will take to the friendly skies next week as Nevada travels to Hawai`i to take on the Warriors. The game isscheduled for an 8:30 p.m. (Pacific) kickoff and will be televised on the WAC Sports Network.
