Nevada Track and Field Athletes of the Week 1/19/10

Track: Gina Deckard

- Deckard posted two personal bests at the UW Indoor Preview Saturday, January 16, 2010 in Seattle. Wash.  She ran the second-fastest time in school history in the 60m hurdles (8.59) and finished third.  She also placed 12th with a PR time of 26.16 in the 200m dash.

Shantel Twiggs on Deckard: "Deckard is really building off her sophomore campaign.  Her confidence is high and training has been amazing.  I see bigger and greater things from her as the season progresses."

Deckard on the meet: "Heading into the UW Indoor Preview I was very excited to compete after many months of training. My goal for this meet was to win my 60 meter hurdles heat (race) and qualify for the finals.  With the proper warm up and mind set I won my heat and ran an 8.75 which was the second fasted time I had ever run, which also lead me to the finals. While warming up for the finals I told myself to have a good start and stay focused. When the gun went off I sprinted to the first hurdle and stayed with my technique and finished the race with a time of 8.59 which was a personal best and .01 seconds from the school record. After I ran that time I could not believe it because I usually would run a time like that toward the end of the season so I am very grateful to nearly break the school record at the first meet."

Field: Jalessa Jeffery

- Jeffery finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 12.59m at the UW Indoor Preview on Saturday, January 16, 2010 in Seattle, Wash.

Shantel Twiggs on Jeffery: "Each meet builds Jaleesa's confidence and by the end of the season you will see Jaleesa in the WAC final."

Jeffery on the meet: "Overall there were some good openers and great PR'S," Jeffery said.  "The performances this past weekend have left room for progression and the potential for a great season.  My teammates and I had a lot of fun at this meet and there is still more excitement to come."
