This Week in Nevada History is a new feature on the official website of Wolf Pack Athletics. Each week, we will feature several of the top moments from that week in the history of the Wolf Pack program, researched and written by Media Services Intern Nick Saccamanno. Check back each week for more information about the history of Nevada Athletics. September 24-30
Sept. 24, 1925 - L.T. "Buck" Shaw coached Nevada to a 7-0 victory in its first game as a member of the Far Western Conference, or any conference for that matter. The thrill of the victory against St. Ignatius of California was short-lived, however, as Nevada suffered a 54-0 defeat to perennial west-coast powerhouse California the following week.
Sept. 26, 1942 - During Marion Motley's senior season, the Wolf Pack recorded the program's 100th victory on the gridiron, opening the season with an 18-09 victory over Cal Poly SLO 18-0. Motley would go on to play for the Cleveland Browns of the All-American Football Conference and National Football League for nine seasons. The first black player to sign a professional football contract, Motley was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 1968.
Sept. 29, 1998 - Suzanne Stonebarger set the Wolf Pack volleyball record for digs in an individual match with 38. In total, Stonebarger owns four of the top 10 dig performances in Wolf Pack history. Her career digs mark of 1,532 ranks first all time at Nevada. Stonebarger and fellow former Wolf Pack star Michelle More have gone on to enjoy substantial success on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. "Team Gorgeous," as the volleyball press has coined them, ranks in the top 10 in matches played as an American duo in the history of the AVP Tour. They have finished a career-best fifth on six separate occasions.
