DAVIS, Calif. The Nevada softball team left 10 runners on base and committed a pair of errors in an 8-3 loss at UC Davis on Wednesday at La Rue Softball Field.
The Wolf Pack fell to 26-12 on the year while the Aggies improved to 20-16.
Senior Brittany Puzey went 3-for-3 to tie the school record with a 17-game hitting streak. That matched teammate Noelle Micka, who had a 17-game streak earlier this year. That is also the longest hitting streak in the WAC this season.
The Pack got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning. With one out, Kym Silagyi drew a four-pitch walk. Puzey then singled through the right side to give Nevada runners on first and second with one out.
Davis took the lead in the bottom of the inning as Sarah Axelrod hit a two-run homer just over the fence in left field. The Aggies then added two more unearned runs on Rachel Miller’s two run single.
Nevada cut the lead to 4-2 in the second inning as Danielle Patrick doubled and scored on Noelle Micka’s single up the middle.
But the Aggies came right back with three runs in the bottom of the second to go up 7-2.
In the top of the third, Nevada missed a golden chance to put some more runs on the board. The Pack loaded the bases with nobody out as Puzey doubled, Britton Murdock and Kelsey Starr walked. Sam Bias then hit a hard ground ball to third base and Jessica Gonzalez fielded it and came home to force Puzey and then Miller went to first to get Bias and the double play.
But the Pack would load the bases again in the inning as Sarah Hunt walked. But Katie Stith was called out on strikes to end the threat.
Katie Holverson, who came on in the third inning in relief of Mallary Darby, stabilized the game for the Pack with a couple scoreless innings in the third, fourth and fifth innings. But the Pack couldn’t get any offense going to get back into the game.
Nevada loaded the bases with nobody out again in the seventh inning as Micka singled and Silagyi singled to right before Puzey walked. Pinch-hitter Michelle Beach lined out to left field for the first out of the inning. Starr then hit a sinking liner behind the first baseman but Julie Stauder made a diving catch for the second out of the inning.
Bias singled to right to score one run but Hunt fouled out to end Nevada’s last threat.
The Wolf Pack will return to action Friday in the first of three games at Boise State.
